$130K Bail For UNC Councillor Charged With Misbehaving In Public Office

UNC Councillor for Cumuto/Tamana, Anil Maharaj was granted $130,000 bail when he appeared virtually before a Port of Spain Magistrate on Friday, charged with one count of Misbehaviour in Public Office.

Maharaj was arrested and charged on Thursday, following investigations conducted by the Anti-Corruption Investigations Bureau (ACIB) and on the advice of  Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard SC.

Maharaj, who chairs the Finance Committee at the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation, is alleged to have demanded the sum of $15,000 from a contractor at the Corporation.

As part of his bail conditions, Maharaj was ordered to surrender his passport to the Court Registrar at the Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Court and have no contact with the witness.

He also has to report to the Sangre Grande Police Station between 6 am and 6 pm every Wednesday.

He is due to reappear in court on August 4th.
