Watson Duke Threatens Legal Action Over State’s ‘Hiring Freeze’

By Newsroom

President of the Public Service Association, Watson Duke, says he intends to take legal action against the State, seeking to overturn its recent  decision to freeze hiring in the public sector.

This was one of the measures announced by Finance Minister Colm Imbert during Monday’s reading of the National Budget 2020/2021.

The move came into immediate effect and is expected to be in place for a one year period.

At a press briefing on Thursday, the PSA President said the Finance Minister did not consult with the union before making the announcement in his budget presentation.

“I am prepared to take the government to court on a constitution motion. You see, the government cannot do whatsoever they want. We are prepared to stop the government from going any further with this. And I will call my lawyers and question them about our rights,” he said.

The PSA President is now threatening to take protest action in the capital city.

“Minister of Finance, shake up yourself. Because there will be protests on the streets- Covid or no Covid. And I will tell you this, when we ready to protest, we will be using our vehicles to drive around the town, honk we horn, and post bandanas on the vehicles,” he warned.
