As government handed over the Malabar Government Primary School on Thursday, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley said though students will not be returning to classes in September, the building is a reminder of the return to a semblance of normalcy once the pandemic situation improves. 

It is the fourth school to be commissioned and handed over by government in recent weeks. 

“We know that we take this empty school with the full knowledge that our future is assured, even as we grapple with a pandemic,” Dr. Rowley said as he gave the feature address.  

He reflected on the controversy which surrounded the school in past years, including a closure due to sewer issues and the eventual relocation of students for an extended period of time.

“The trials and tribulations of the parents and the students- and accepting today that they were placed in containers. And I could remember the days when that news asked the question- how come this was happening? It was because there were a number of problems to be solved and this problem was not priority number one but its day would come- and today its day has come,” Dr. Rowley said. 

“And I want to juts thank all the citizens who didn’t allow all those circumstances to overcome them, but to have confidence in the governance structure in the country,  that where there are problems, an honest attempt will be made to solve them,” the Prime Minister said. 

Another primary school will be officially commissioned tomorrow.  

Education Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly will be commissioning the Siparia Union Presbyterian Primary School, Lalla Street, Siparia at 1:00 pm.
