Saudi Arabia stun Argentina with opening win at World Cup 2022

By Shirvan Williams

Saudi Arabia edged past Argentina in what is being called one of the biggest World Cup upsets ever. The Saudi team beat Lionel Messi’s Argentina 2-1 earlier this morning (Nov. 22).

Messi has already hinted that this is probably his last bid to bring the trophy home to Argentina.

Goals by Saleh Alshehri and Salem Aldawsari in a five-minute span in the second half gave the Saudis the win. They also played with resolute defence to keep Argentina’s strikes out.

The win also brought Argentina’s 36-match unbeaten run to an end.
