St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago – February 05, 2026 – For three actuarial science students at The University of the West Indies (The UWI), St. Augustine Campus, dedication, discipline and academic excellence have opened doors far beyond the lecture hall.

Reece Mohammed, Leah Madoo and Dylan Sampson have been named recipients of the 2025
Fullerton-Long Afro-Caribbean Scholarship. This scholarship is a competitive award designed to support talented students of Afro-Caribbean heritage pursuing actuarial studies in the Caribbean and the United Kingdom.

Now in its fifth year, each recipient receives £3,000, along with access to mentorship, career
development opportunities and professional networking through the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) Foundation, resources that are critical in navigating one of the world’s most demanding professions.

The scholarship was co-founded by UWI alumni Andrew Long and Norbert Fullerton, whose own early experiences with scholarships shaped their commitment to promote diversity within the actuarial profession. Both founders have gone on to distinguished careers in the field and remain deeply invested in creating pathways for the next generation of Caribbean talent.

“This scholarship isn’t just about funding, it’s about creating access and opportunity,” noted Norbert Fullerton, former Partner at Lane Clark & Peacock in the United Kingdom. “Our scholars represent the future of the profession, bringing fresh ideas, innovation and leadership.”

Co-founder Andrew Long, Managing Director at Willis Towers Watson, echoed that sentiment, noting the consistent calibre of the UWI students. “We’re continually inspired by the talent and determination of the UWI students. Their achievements make us proud to invest in the region’s future.”

Since its establishment in 2021, the Fullerton-Long Afro-Caribbean Scholarship has awarded more than 30 actuarial science students across The UWI’s Mona and St. Augustine campuses, as well as Afro-Caribbean students studying in the United Kingdom. Mr Stokeley Smart, Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of the BSc. in Actuarial Science, at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in the Faculty of Science and Technology, commented,

“The IFoA Foundation Fullerton-Long Caribbean Scholarship and, in particular, Mr Norbert Fullerton and Mr Andrew Long, represent the very core of The UWI’s values. These sons of the region, and The UWI Alumni are exemplary global leaders in their field and are eager to give back to The UWI and contribute to the development of the region.”

The UWI community celebrates this latest cohort of awardees and their commitment to academic excellence and leadership. The achievements of Reece Mohammed, Leah Madoo and Dylan Sampson stand as a testament to what is possible when talent meets opportunity and when alumni reinvest in the futures of those who follow.
