Top Cop Warns Political Parties: I Will Not Hesitate To Shut Down Non-Complying Motorcades

Police Commissioner Gary Griffith vows that he will not hesitate to shut down motorcades by any political party who continues to breach the COVID-19 public health regulations.

His warning comes on the heels of two motorcades from the UNC and PNM being disbanded over the weekend.

At a media briefing on Monday, Griffith said acquiring the necessary permission from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service was necessary to maintain order.

“Not everyone wants to be involved in a political meeting or to get a jersey and you can’t inconvenience people because of your role and your function and your goals and your needs,” he said.

He reminded that the guidelines as stipulated in the Public Health regulations also applies to political gatherings- particularly that groups of more than 25 people should not gather in a public space.

“We need candidates to be responsible and to understand that as much as this is an election campaign and you need to do all that is required to win support, you have to look at the bigger picture.,” he said.
