Antigua & Barbuda Is Latest Country To Declare Public Holiday In Honor Of Queen Elizabeth II

By Newsroom

Antigua and Barbuda has announced a national holiday next Monday, in honor of Queen Elizabeth II, whose funeral will be held on that day.

The announcement was made on Wednesday.

Last week, following the Queen’s passing, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced that he intends to call for a referendum on the country becoming a republic within three years.

Browne signed a document confirming Charles III’s status as the new King, but minutes later, said he would push for a republic referendum.

The Caribbean country is one of 14 nations to retain the British monarch as their head of state.

In the UK on Wednesday, mourners were able to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth as her coffin lies in state in Westminster Hall.

She was brought in a procession from Buckingham Palace as Princes William and Harry, along with King Charles III, walked behind the coffin.

There are long lines of more than two miles along the South Bank of the Thames as people wait for their turn to pay their respects.
