Army Called To Discipline Quarantined 40; Testing Capacity Will Be Expanded

The Trinidad and Tobago Regiment was called in to bring order among the 40 cruise ship passengers who were at Camp Balandra and are now quarantined at the Couva Hospital. “We had to call the Army to talk to them to adhere to quarantine rules, to stop violating the zones we put for them, “Health minister Dr. Terrence Deyalsingh said at a news conference on Monday afternoon. At the same time, Dr Deyalsingh expressed alarm at the fact that a Preschool in Powder Magazine- in Cocorite sent a letter declaring that it was open for business. “We had to shut them down,” the Health Minister said. Meantime, there will be a rapid expansion of testing in the coming weeks. “The Caribbean Public Health Agency (Carpha) will test all samples that fit the criteria of potential exposure- not limited to Trinidad and Tobago. “At the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) a PCR machine, to be evaluated by Carpha- will be able to supplement the work currently being done by the end of the week. “An additional PCR machine in the country will go to the Trinidad Public Health Laboratory and will be up and running in two to three weeks, “Deyalsingh explained. “We will have to fly in a technician and a corporate donor will fly that person on a private jet. “A fourth machine for International Atomic Energy Agency within four to six weeks. “We are going to be well served by testing and PCR machines,” the Health Minister stated. Noting that the upgraded facilities means that they could handle 180 cases per day and that travelers who are quarantined- along with their primary contacts, will be tested, along with the high risk groups who are not showing symptoms, will be tested. There will be expanded health care worker testing by the end of the week. Corporate TT is providing free meals to all involved in the COVID-19 response while TSTT will give them free credit to keep in touch with families. Additionally the Health Minister warned that you should not send your samples to Private labs that are currently doing rapid tests which are in East, South and Central Trinidad- The Statistics: 46 of 254 beds available at the Couva Hospital   are occupied 18 of the beds available at Caura are used which means that 82 are vacant At Arima 90 beds, 4 ICU and 6 HDU will be available soon.
