As CPL Is Set To Take Place In Trinidad Next Month, Kamla Asks “But What About Our Citizens Abroad?”

By Newsroom

It’s official- the 2020 Caribbean Premier League will take place in Trinidad next month, as Cabinet approved the event on Thursday.

The news has prompted Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar to question why allowances were being made to host the event when, in her view, government had been slow to return T&T nationals who are currently abroad.

Speaking at a United National Congress (UNC) virtual political meeting last evening, Persad-Bissessar called it a “wicked” move, asking “How could you approve this and at the same time bar our citizens from returning home to vote. Apparently covid19 will magically disappear after the elections. This act proves that the government is playing a diabolical game by using the covid situation to electioneer and suppress campaigning of opposition parties.”

Sports Minister Shamfa Cudjoe says strict COVID-19 guidelines will be in place for the tournament, including no spectators allowed in the stands during the tournament, which will run from August 18th to September 12th.
