Bar Owners Explore Legal Options To Extend Opening Hours

By Newsroom

The Bar Owners and Operators Association of Trinidad and Tobago is considering sending a pre-action protocol letter to the Attorney General, the latest in their efforts to get the government to extend their closing times.

On June 22, government announced that bars would be allowed to resume, along with most other business, with a closing time of 10pm.

This was later restricted to two hours earlier at 8pm, following  several reports of errant bars going against the public health regulations.

In a statement on Saturday, the Association said after seeking a legal opinion from Anand Ramlogan, SC it is believed that a successful constitutional challenge to the COVID-19 regulation restriction on the operating hours can be made.

Because the regulations were not passed in the Parliament, the Association believes government “eroded the sacred fundamental rights of citizens in a disproportionate manner will be stronger and more acceptable.”
