Beaches On Western Coast Of Tobago Remain Closed Following Shark Attack

Beaches on the western end of Tobago will remain closed and reopen on a phased basis, following last Friday’s shark attack at Turtle Bay.

The decision was taken during an emergency stakeholder meeting, held at the Tobago Emergency Operations Centre on Saturday.

Beaches in the northeast and east of the island, however, remain open.

Officials are also looking at embarking on increased public education and safety tips, in the interest of public safety and preservation of life.  

Meanwhile, British national Peter Smith is said to be in a stable condition at the Intensive Care Unit of the Scarborough General Hospital after completing surgery following last Friday’s shark attack.

Deputy Chief Secretary Dr.Faith Yisrael said in an update that the victim’s appendages have so far been preserved and a comprehensive status report will be provided soon.
