BREAKING: Derek Chauvin Sentenced To 22.5 Years In George Floyd Murder Case

By Newsroom

Ex Minnesotta police Officer Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison for the killing George Floyd which took place last May, sparking protests worldwide about racial injustice and police brutality.

Chauvin, 45, was convicted in April on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for his role in Floyd’s death.

In a brief statement this afternoon, ahead of the sentencing, Chauvin offered condolences to Floyd’s family.

“I want to give my condolences to the Floyd family. There’s going to be some other information in the future that will be of interest and I hope things would give you some peace of mind. Thank you,” he said.

Hours before the sentence was handed down on Friday, Chauvin’s post-verdict motion for a new trial was denied by a judge.

Hennepin County District Court Judge Peter Cahill ruled Thursday night that Chauvin “failed to demonstrate … the Court abused its discretion or committed error such that Defendant was deprived of his constitutional right to a fair trial.”
