Prince Phillip has died at the age of 99, just two months shy of celebrating his 100th birthday.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said the Duke of Edinburgh died peacefully this morning at the Windsor Castle, weeks after being discharged from hospital where he had been treated for a heart condition.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.”

“Further announcements will made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss,” it added.
