British-Trini claims top poetry TS Eliot prize in England

Roger Robinson has copped the prestigious TS Eliot prize. Robinson is a British-Trinidadian dub poet, He won the £25,000 TS Eliot top prize.

According to the British Newspaper The Guardian Robinson, splits his time between London and Trinidad and is a long-time performer of dub poetry. Dub poetry traces its roots from other West Indian poetry art forms.

Robinson claimed the prize for his piece A Portable Paradise, which was published by Peepal Tree Press. John Burnside, chair of the judges, said A Portable Paradise had “the bitterness of everyday experience continuing evidence of ‘sweet, sweet life’.”
