By Newsroom

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has closed Canada’s borders to international travellers and will be limiting incoming flights. But flights to an from the US and Mexico will not be affected.

Canadians who are unable to return home will be able to access funding from the government.

“We will be closing our borders to people who are not citizens or permanent residents of Canada,” Trudeau told a news conference on Monday.

All airlines will receive a formal order to ban individuals who are showing symptoms of COVID-19. Those believed to be sick will not be allowed to travel.

The only airports that will currently receive international flights will be Toronto Pearson, Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Vancouver International Airport and Calgary International Airport.

He also confirmed that any Canadians who are unable to return home will be able to access funding from the government.

The Prime Minister spoke from his home, as he remains in self-isolation after his wife was confirmed to have COVID-19.

His comments come as services have shut down or scaled back across Canada, such as schools, universities, public libraries, fitness centres, shops, recreation centres and restaurants.
