FLASHBACK: Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley chats with President of the Republic of Haiti, His Excellency Jovenel Moïse after the conclusion of Day 2 of the 29th Inter-Sessional Meeting of the CARICOM Heads of Government in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley has offered condolences to the family of Haiti President Jovonel Moïse, who was assassinated early on Wednesday morning.

“The Government of Trinidad and Tobago is shocked at the tragic developments in Haiti with the assassination of the President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse earlier this morning,” Dr. Rowley said in a statement.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the family of President Moïse and to the Government and People of Haiti, our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on this most distressing occurrence.”

“Trinidad and Tobago pledges to work together with our CARICOM colleagues and other hemispheric and international partners to support Haiti at this very difficult time,” he added.

Gunmen stormed the home of Haiti President Jovenel Moïse on Wednesday morning, killing him and injuring his wife.

First Lady Martine Moïse was rushed from the residence in the capital Port-Au-Prince to hospital for treatment.

Wednesday’s attack came amid intense political tension and instability in the Caribbean country, with the Opposition long calling for Moïse to resign.

Haiti is due to hold elections and a controversial constitutional referendum later this year.

The referendum had been championed by Moïse as an opportunity to strengthen the Haitian presidency.
