Christine Kangaloo For President

By Newsroom

Trinidad and Tobago could see its second female president appointed to office immediately on the heels of Paula-Mae Weekes’ historic term.

On Friday, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley revealed that Christine Kangaloo, current President of the Senate, was the government’s consideration for a nominee.

It followed a meeting with members of the Opposition, led by Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Ms. Kangaloo will be required to vacate her seat as Senate President however Prime Minister Rowley said the question of exactly when that would be, was still to be determined after seeking legal advice.

Responding to concerns about her independence- given she served in the late Patrick Manning’s Cabinet- Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley said the Constitution does not bar a person who has served in the Parliament from ascending to the position of President of the country.

He pointed out, over the past seven years that she has served as leader of the Senate, Ms. Kangaloo also acted as President on several occasions.

“And during that seven years we are satisfied that she served and did not disqualify in any way by her conduct. So being a former minister of government is part of her tool and experience. She has served as both sides of parliament floor. What excellent qualification of a person who is asked to move into a job and what is required for the presidency is a character and senator Kangaloo has demonstrated that she has that,” he said.

He added: “She has never had a scandal, never had to explain her qualification. She is very straightforward and I think we are happy and lucky to have someone like that.”

The electoral college, which is both houses of Parliament, will meet on January 20th to elect a new President.
