Commission of Enquiry For Divers’ Deaths Down To Two Members, PM Reveals

By Newsroom

The Commission of Enquiry set up to look into the deaths of four divers which occurred last month will only comprise two members instead of three as was initially announced.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley says the two-man team will seek advice from a foreign firm which will serve in a consultant role.

It will be up to the Chairman of the Commission, Attorney Shiv Sharma, to decide what calls are made for papers and appearances, Dr. Rowley said, stressing Cabinet has no oversight into the investigation.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar has criticized Cabinet making yet another change to the structure of the Commission of Enquiry looking into the four divers’ deaths, accusing government of dragging its feet in the matter.

Despite there being no conclusion in investigations, Persad-Bissessar said she finds it “obscene” that the board and management of Paria still have their jobs.

“While the Government uses paid PNM bloggers to attack the families of the Divers and treat the sole survivor as an enemy of the state, no questions have been asked by the Rowley Government of Newman George and the board at Paria Fuel,” she said.
