Conviction Overturned: Court of Appeal Orders Retrial In Sean Luke Case

By Newsroom

Akeel Mitchell  and Richard Chatoo, the two men convicted of murder in the Sean Luke case, will now have to face a fresh trial, after the Appeal Court on Tuesday found that Justice Lisa Ramsumair-Hinds made a number of material errors in the matter which “led to a serious miscarriage of justice.”

The decision was made by Justices of Appeal Nolan Bereaux, Mark Mohammed and Maria Wilson, after the State’s prosecutors said they could not defend the appeal filed by both men.

A new trial will start before another judge, no later than Monday.

The men, who were convicted in July 2021- sixteen years after Sean Luke was killed- have denied committing the crime.
