Cops Accused of Robbing Venezuelan Nationals

Two police officers, who are alleged to have robbed three Venezuelan nationals, have been charged with misbehaviour in public office after an investigation by the Professional Standards Bureau of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.

The incident occurred on Monday and Corporal Hadeed Mohammed and  Constable  Mukesh Sylvester were arrested on Tuesday and charged on Thursday.

Both men are due to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate today “charged with misbehaviour in public office to wit robbery, following an incident involving three Venezuelan nationals, which occurred on March 9th 2020,” the TTPS stated in a news release.

Mohammed, 42,  who has twenty years service and 26-year-old Mukesh Sylvester who has been a policeman since he was 20 years old are both attached to the North Eastern Division’s Emergency Response Patrol.

They were charged on Thursday, three days after the incident is alleged to have occurred.

“The victims reported to police that on Monday 9th March they were at an apartment building in the Barataria district when two police officers forcibly gained entry into the premises.

“The officers then proceeded to rob the victims of a quantity of US and TT currency at gunpoint before leaving.

“A report was made to the police and investigations found that the two police officers were on duty at the time the alleged offences were committed,” the TTPS stated.

“They were subsequently arrested by officers of the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) on Tuesday.
