By Newsroom

Those who lost their jobs as a result of existing Covid-19 Public Health Regulations will be eligible to receive a $1000 Income Relief grant from government for the month of May.

This is one of the measures announced by Finance Minister Colm Imbert this afternoon.

Some 20,000 people will be able to receive the grant, which should become available through an online system which will be launched, for the latest, by next Monday.

Minister Imbert assured that tighter mechanisms were being put in place to prevent “double-dipping” which occurred during the early days of the pandemic.

Here are other  Covid-19 social support measures announced by the Finance Minister:

-The Ministry of Agriculture will provide 25,000 food baskets comprising local vegetables and two chickens for May. These food baskets will be distributed in all 41 constituencies and will be in addition to food cards.

-Small business grants in the sum of $20,000

-Government in talks with commercial banks to make loans more easily available to small businesses.

Government is looking to purchase a total of 1.5 million Covid-19 vaccines from different suppliers in order to meet the goal of herd immunity.
