By Newsroom

Trinidad and Tobago has lost another one of its cultural gems with the passing of Musical Director of the Southernaires Choir, Joy Caesar.

Caesar,  who was in her lifetime awarded the Hummingbird Bird Gold Medal and the Chaconia Gold Medal for her outstanding service to Trinidad and Tobago in the fields of Music and Community Service, died in the early hours of Saturday morning at a nursing home in San Fernando.

She is said to have been ailing for some time.

In offering condolences to her family and friends, Tourism Minister, Randall Mitchell remembered her legacy.

“She always went above and beyond with her artistic talent and The Southernaires Choir is a testament to her excellence,” he shared in a post to his Facebook page.

San Fernando-East MP, Brian Manning, also offered his condolences.

“Today we have lost an icon, a leader, a visionary, a true national treasure,” he said, describing Caesar as a “champion of the arts and a formidable figure who has impacted the lives of so many in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean region.”

Her death comes just eight days after T&T collectively mourned the death of Dennis “Sprangalang” Hall, whose celebration of life was held on the morning of Caesar’s passing.
