Deyalsingh: “Government Still In Talks With US About Vaccine Donation”

By Newsroom

Government is still engaged in talks with officials at the White House about the possibility of Trinidad and Tobago acquiring out of the 500 million US vaccine donation being shared worldwide.

This is according to Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh, who told the Senate on Monday that it’s too early to make any pronouncements on whether or not T&T is eligible to receive doses under the vaccine sharing arrangement.

“The matter is actively being discussed among the following parties- the White House, PAHO, CARPHA, the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs,” the Health Minister said in response to a question from Oppposition Senator Wade Mark.

Senator Mark then questioned how would T&T’s vaccination plan be impacted if the talks do not end in the country’s favor.

“It is premature to accept the assertion- it is being actively pursued, let us wait for the fruit to ripen out of those discussions,” Deyalsingh said.

The Health Minister further noted that government was not only depending on doses from the US, noting that 200,000 Sinopharm vaccines landed in the country last week, with another 300,000 doses to arrive next month.
