Eight New Covid Cases Today, Health Ministry On Look Out For Post-Holiday Spike

By Newsroom

Eight new Covid-19 cases have been reported by the Health Ministry in its update for today, putting the number of cases on record to 7,273 with 282 of those being active.

There are now 26 positive patients in hospital and 241 others in self isolation.

Despite Monday’s low number, the Ministry of Health continues to monitor what could be a spike in Covid-19 cases coming out of the Christmas season.

Earlier, at Monday’s Covid-19 press briefing, Director of Epidemiology Dr. Avery Hinds noted that the Ministry recorded 25 and 21 new cases on Saturday and Sunday respectively, breaking a trend of 8 to 12 new daily cases.

“One current trend that we have noted in the past couple of days, meaning over the past two days specifically, is that we’re now beginning to see slightly larger number of cases per day than we’ve seen throughout the early part of the year, throughout the first seven days or so.

“Where we had between eight and 12 cases most times per day, we did note there were cases rising into the twenties-25, 21-over the past two days, and this may very well be as a result of any of the gathering and congregational activities that may have occurred two weeks ago.”

He said 14 day period  represented the beginning of the Christmas festivities, from December 25th.

“We’re hoping that this doesn’t establish itself as a rising trend but we do note the beginning of an increase, and we do note that they may very well be related to whatever activities took place behind the scenes over the Christmas period,” he said.
