Extortion Charges Re-laid Against Seven Officers After Case Collapse

By Newsroom

Charges have been re-laid against seven police officers who walked free on extortion charges last Monday due to poor preparation of the case by prosecution.

The TTPS confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that all seven officers will be made to face the courts once more, after advice was given by the Director of Public Prosecution for the charges to be re-laid.

Commissioner Erla Harewood- Christopher stated, “The re-laying of these charges demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that justice is served. The TTPS will continue to work closely with the office of the DPP to ensure the proper determination of these matters.”

The seven officers in the extortion case were Insp Deyal Ramlakhan, acting Cpl Shaheed Khan, PC Davanan Ragbir, PC Jason Osouna, PC Macai Joseph, PC Cleon Smith and PC Reyon Charles.

Five others in a separate case also walked free last week on bribery charges.

On Monday, two more police officers were cleared on extortion charges, bringing the overall number of officers to be cleared of bribery related offences over the past two weeks to 14.

Police Constables Keiran Morang and Nicholas Raghoobar were discharged by Master of the High Court Sarah De Silva.

The officers were alleged to have demanded a $30,000 payment from an Arouca couple after raiding their home and seizing marijuana, ammunition and camouflage clothing.
