Fake Kidnapping busted

After he was asked to report to the Barrackpore Police Station, Shane Ramjattan broke down and confessed that he told tall tales about being kidnapped by Venezuelans.

The 24-year-old man was subsequently charged with wasteful employment of police time by making a false police report.

He was fined TT$600 when he appeared before  a Rio Claro Magistrate on Tuesday. Failure to pay the fine means he will spend two months in jail.

 Ramjattan was reported missing by his family on  January 16th. Two days later he showed up and told the  Barrackpore police that he had been kidnapped from the Penal district on Wednesday, January 15th   was beaten, taken to a forested area and forced to clean weapons and pack drugs by his kidnappers before being released.

He peddled this same story to the media when he was interviewed.

 Cops who found irregularities in his report launched an investigation and charges were laid yesterday.
