Four more cases of the Covid-19 virus confirmed in T&T

Four more cases of the Covid-19 virus have been confirmed in Trinidad and Tobago. The Ministry of Health in their daily update said, as of the morning of Monday, 30th March, 2020 the number of samples submitted to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) for testing for COVID-19 was 539 and 82 of the samples tested positive. Two of the new cases were recorded in Tobago.

The number of deaths has remained at 3 and one person has been discharged

Of the four additional positive cases confirmed, the first one was a close contact of someone who tested positive for COVID-19. The second and third confirmed cases had close contact with someone with a recent travel history. The fourth confirmed case is still pending epidemiological investigation and the Chief Medical Officer Dr Roshan Parasram said that case may be the first incidence of local spread. He stressed that there is no community spread at this time. He also said at this time most of the cases are imported.

Of the total number of positive cases, 49 of these positive cases came from the group of nationals who recently returned from a cruise:

  • 46 positive cases from the group of 68 nationals who returned from the cruise together
  • 3 positive cases from the group of nationals who returned from the same cruise separately from the other 68 nationals.

The CMO also revealed that there are three cases in ICU at the moment, two of them are stable and the other is critical. He said at this time citizens should act as if everyone has the virus and take the necessary precautions.

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh urged citizens to stay at home to protect the society and stressed that people should not exercise in public spaces to prevent the spread of the virus. He also revealed that the ventilators which were expected have arrived in the country.
