Fuad Abu Bakr Detained For Over 24 Hours

By Newsroom

Political leader of the New National Vision (NNV) Fuad Abu Bakr remained in police custody for a second day on Wednesday, after being arrested during protests in the capital city the day before.

He was one of 72 people arrested on Tuesday, for allegedly “inciting violence”, according to police- Bakr was taping a live video of the demonstrations when he was held near Riverside Plaza.

Hours after his arrest, Leader of the Jamaat Al Muslimeen, Yasin Abu Bakr, called for his son to be released- insisting he had been trying to calm the passionate crowd.

While charges have not yet been laid, it’s possible he may be hit with breaching the COVID-19 Public Health regulations.

During Wednesday’s sitting of the House of Representatives, National Security Minister Stuart Young said the possible pending charges for the 72 people range from breaching the orders,  resisting arrests, malicious damage to property and obstruction of justice.
