Gary Griffith: There Was No ‘Doubles’ Standard

By Newsroom

Police Commissioner Gary Griffith is denying allegations that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) acted with discrimination when they ordered a particular doubles vendor to cease their operations last week.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mr. Griffith said based on a directive from the Chief Medical Officer and in keeping with the guidelines from the World Health Organization, officers were instructed to inform all relevant food suppliers that all mobile and road side vending was to cease, “be it doubles, corn soup, gyro, shark and bake, hamburger, or souse.”

He added that the TTPS has found it “difficult” to uphold the regulations put in place to treat with COVID-19, “as many citizens try to test, challenge and query the policies and regulations that are being established to preserve life, and not just over what is perceived.”

Now that all food outlets have been mandated to close until April 30th, however, Mr. Griffith is confident that the lines “will no longer be blurred as to what is acceptable and what is not.”
