By Newsroom

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley on Thursday wrote to CARICOM Secretary-General, Irwin La Rocque, and the  Commonwealth Secretary-General,  Patricia Scotland QC, inviting both parties to send election observation missions under its auspices to observe Trinidad and Tobago’s processes and operations in the upcoming August 10th general election.

Dr. Rowley made the announcement on his official social media page on Thursday afternoon.

The move comes one day after political leader of the United National Congress, Kamla Persad Bissessar, wrote to Dr. Rowley requesting same.

“While the United National Congress acknowledges the ongoing global Covid 19 pandemic and the public health regulations that are currently in effect, we are very concerned that measures are not in place to ensure citizens are able to exercise their franchise,” she wrote, adding that “International election observation or monitoring is an important mechanism for ensuring election integrity, and the UNC is of the firm view that international observers are needed to ensure that our election is conducted in a free, fair, and just manner that will reflect the true mandate of the people.”
