Glass Bottles Banned for Carnival 2020

By Newsroom

The use of glass bottles will be banned for the Carnival period- from 4 am on Carnival Monday to midnight on Carnival Tuesday.

Failure to do so will incur a fine of TT$500 and imprisonment for three months.

But  Police Commissioner Gary Griffith who welcomed the ban at the official announcement on Friday morning said the police intend to be “flexible and we hope that people won’t take our meekness for weakness and that good sense will prevail and that persons won’t have the police service go to that extent,” Griffith said.

“We are asking the public to adhere to this ban with a degree of responsibility and maturity. If we start picking up the patterns during the period before Carnival Monday and Tuesday, it would be easier to adhere to the ban on such days,” the top cop reasoned.

National Security Minister Stuart Young said “the ban on glass bottles has been implemented to avoid instances of injury and ensure the safety of patrons during carnival.

There’s been a spike in injuries reported during the carnival period from ten reports in 2014 to as much as 43 in 2018, according to the statistics provided by the National Security Minister.
