Government implements more measures to combat Covid-19 fallout

There is nothing more that the government can do for T&T nationals who are stranded abroad in countries that have closed their borders.  National Security Minister Stuart Young has advised them to reach out to nearby embassies.

During a media update earlier today Young said: “Venezuela has decided to shut its borders. I am being bombarded by members of the media saying that there are 70 Trinidadians in Margarita, saying that the government has abandoned them.”

“I am emphasising there is nothing the government can do, under those circumstances, unfortunately.”

“We will do as much as we can but within the parameters of sovereign countries taking decisions to close their borders…unfortunately, persons stuck in countries where there are no international flights, there’s nothing we can do.”

Dr Rowley also advised that more cases are expected in the coming days and he urged the public to remain calm and to take all the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.

Several other measures were announced during the meeting to help the nation cope with the pandemic. Parents whose children rely heavily on the School Feeding Programme will be issued Food cards.

In addition current Food Card holders will receive an additional three months payment on or before April 15th. Street dwellers are also expected to be given assistance during this time. As the fight against Covid-19 continues at least 100 personnel will be deployed to do contact tracing on the ground.
