Government Moves Ahead With Nomination Of Christine Kangaloo For President

By Newsroom

Christine Kangaloo’s name has formally been submitted to Parliament as government’s nominee for President.

The latest update came from Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley on Monday, as he dismissed attacks from the Opposition over Ms. Kangaloo’s past affiliation with the PNM.

“Around the world, I know of no instance- or I may protect myself and say one could hardly find an instance in the countries that are deemed to be democracies, where you have a President, Executive or otherwise, who is a person who has never had any involvement in the political world,” Dr. Rowley told a media conference at the Diplomatic Centre in St. Ann’s.

As he defended the constitutionally sound decision to nominate Ms. Kangaloo, Dr. Rowley also commented on the Opposition’s nominee, attorney Israel Khan SC.

“Israel Khan is a personal Lawyer. Israel Khan has been in a number of political parties, the ONR the NAR and I dare say he is a UNC activist. Israel Khan has been very outspoken in abusing me publicly, and the PNM and others and therefore I think that’s a good pick for Mrs Kamla Persad Bissessar,” Rowley said.

The Opposition on Monday filed nomination papers for Mr. Khan to be considered for Presidency.
