Government: “No Job Loss From Temporary Nutrien Plant Shutdown”

By Newsroom

The recent decision by Nutrien Limited to temporarily shutdown one of its ammonia plants in Point Lisas will not translate into job losses.

This is according to National Security Minister Stuart Young, who responded to a question on the matter during Wednesday’s sitting of the Senate.

“One out of five of their (Nutrien) plants will be put in an idle mode for the next 90 days; they are not letting go anyone during this 90 day period,” he clarified.

He also rejected Opposition Senator Wade Mark’s claim that there is a “growing dislocation” of  workers at the Point Lisas Estate, adding that the global petrochemical market has been affected by COVID-19. “The demand in the Asian markets and in the European markets for the commodity products that come out of Point Lisas has been completely wiped out. There is no more demand so therefore the supply has been affected”he said.

Minister Young said government is in constant communication with the relevant stakeholders on the matter and will collaborate where and when necessary.
