Government Scraps Current Vaccine System For Elderly, New Program Coming Next Week

By Newsroom

Government has announced a decision to do away with the alphabetical system for vaccinating the elderly, admitting it “was not working”.

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh says the new program, which will start next Wednesday (June 16th) will cater to those 65 and over only- a change from the previous 60 and over limit.

He was speaking at Saturday’s Covid-19 press briefing at the Dimplomatic Centre in St. Ann’s.

Health officials will contact people from this group for appointments, doing away with the “first come, first serve” service.

These vaccinations will take place across the 36 designated health centres and all hospital clinics.

Minister Deyalsingh said government is hoping to have 188,900 people fully vaccinated for Covid-19 by July of this year.

Also speaking on Saturday, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley apologized for the mis-step which lead to chaos this past week, with thousands flocking to the healthcare centres hoping to be vaccinated.

“Wednesday was a bad day. We tried to do too much with too little; I as Prime Minister unreservedly apologize,” he said.
