Government To Send Relief Items To Grenada, SVG Tonight

By Newsroom

A shipment of relief supplies will leave Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday night for Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, who were severely impacted by the passage of Hurricane Beryl on Monday.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley made the announcement following a meeting between CARICOM heads which was held virtually earlier today.

“It was reported by Prime Minister Mitchell of Grenada that Carriacou has been totally wrecked by Hurricane Beryl. Similarly, Prime Minister Gonzalves of St Vincent and the Grenadines reported on the devastation of Canouan, Union Island and Mayreau. The Government of Trinidad and Tobago is mobilizing relief supplies to be urgently dispatched by marine crafts tonight,” Dr. Rowley said in a statement posted to his social media page.

Meanwhile, with the July/August vacation upon us, Trinidad and Tobago has taken a decision to allow school-age children from Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines to stay in this country if they have relatives here.

The move is meant to ease the burden of parents who will remain in their homeland and try to piece their lives back together following the destruction caused by Beryl.

“Given the level of total devastation experienced on these islands, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago acknowledging the deep familial ties between these islands and Trinidad and Tobago has offered to allow school-age children from the devastated zones to be allowed into Trinidad and Tobago if they have family here, who may wish to house them during the school holiday period which is upon us at this time,” PM Rowley said.
