Grenada Sets Up Ethics Committee For Treatment As Covid-19 Cases Surge On Island

By Newsroom

Facing an increase in Covid-19 infections which threatens to cripple the country’s healthcare system, the Grenadian government has set up an Ethics Committee, tasked with the weight of deciding who may live and who may die, should hospitals become stretched beyond their capacity.

Grenada’s Health Minister Nickolas Steele said  the Committee will be set up in the coming week.

“It is time now that we put this in place but hope we never use it. This group will decide when the hospitals get inundated, who gets let in and who does not. We do have to have that set up, I do hope that it is never used,” the Health Minister said, acknowledging that it was a difficult conversation to be had.

Grenada is currently facing its worse surge in infections since the pandemic began, moving from a minimal number of cases to nearly 1,200 active Covid cases .

The situation has been described as “dire” by Grenadian Health Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell.
