Health Minister To Meet With Maxi, Taxi Drivers On COVID-19 Guidelines

By Newsroom

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh plans to meet with the heads of the various maxi taxi associations across the country, with a view to encourage stricter adherence to the COVID-19 prevention guidelines.

Speaking at Wednesday’s virtual COVID-19 press briefing, he lamented that several drivers were blatantly ignoring the advice to wear a mask.

“After Monday and Tuesday morning, I actually stopped on the San Juan (taxi) stand there, on the Croisee and I spoke to a group of taxi operators as to why they are not wearing masks… You get a whole range of reasons.  Same thing with maxi-taxi drivers,” he said.

Not being satisfied with the responses given, he said he has asked Minister of Works and Transport, Rohan Sinanan, to help arrange a meeting with himself, possibly the Chief Medical Officer and the heads of the various taxi associations, to find a method to encourage adherence.

With the Attorney General having advised that legislation to enforce the wearing of masks is not a viable option, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh says a strong focus will continue to be placed on moral suasion. For those who cannot wear masks for health reasons, for example asthmatics, the Minister advises that face shields should be worn.
