House Speaker Suspends Sitting Following Repeated Outbursts From Opposition MPs

By Newsroom

House Speaker Brigid Annisette-George was forced to suspend this morning’s historic sitting of the House of Representatives for 15 minutes, after Opposition members repeatedly interrupting the House Speaker  during her opening announcements.

An Opposition motion is to be moved in the Parliament today, for a tribunal to be set up  to have President Paula-Mae Weekes removed from office.

The Opposition takes particular issue with the constitution’s instruction that there is to be no debate on a Motion of this nature.

It argued that Kamla Persad-Bissessar should  be given an opportunity, as the person who filed the Motion, to make a statement.

The House was suspended for 15 minutes, after which the Speaker said she hopes all members would “get back to the serious business of the House”.

That announcement was met by an off-camera voice from the Opposition blurting out “This is a dictatorship!”
