Inmate In Remand Since 2018 Found Hanging In Cell

An inmate who spent the last two years in Remand pending the end of a trial for a kidnapping charge, was found hanging in his cell on Friday. 

The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service, in a statement on Friday afternoon, confirmed that Matthew Wood was discovered hanging in his cell by Officers on duty at the Port of Spain Prison at around 12:35pm.
 
The statement said medical personnel were immediately alerted and Woods was rushed to the Port of Spain General Hospital by prison medical staff who administered CPR en route.
 
He was attended to upon arrival at the facility, and pronounced dead at 1:03pm by the attending physician.
 
His body bore no marks of violence.
 
Mr. Wood’s next of kin was contacted by an assigned Welfare Officer, who informed of his passing.
 
The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service extends condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Matthew Woods and pray that they be granted comfort during this period of grief.
