Is Guyana’s Election Conflict Coming To An End? CJ Validates Voting Recount

By Newsroom

It may be some time again before a winner is officially declared in Guyana’s March 2nd election- however a ruling by the country’s Chief Justice could fast-track the timeline.

Chief Justice Roxane George-Wiltshire on Monday afternoon dismissed an application by private citizen Misenga Jones, which sought to block the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) from using  recount figures from March 13th to declare a winner at the polls.

“There must be finality to judicial decisions. Myriad persons cannot be permitted to engage with multiple applications regarding the same issues, which has been decided, and shield behind the claim that they were not a party to the previous proceeding,” George-Wiltshire said.

The main blockage now, is Jones’ attorneys intent to appeal the Chief Justice’s decision; they have requested that the GECOM refrain from declaring a winner until their application is heard.

Snap general elections were held in Guyana four months ago on March 2nd,  after the government of David A. Granger lost a vote of no confidence by a margin of 33–32 on 21 December 2018
