Islandwide Crackdown on Child Sex Offenders

A 75-year-old man is among three persons charged with offences against children over the weekend.

Forty-six charges, altogether, have also been laid against a couple. Three persons are expected to appear Another person remains in police custody in the Tobago Division, pending charges, in what appears to be a crackdown by the Child Protection Unit (CPU) of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS).

“In the first incident, officers of the Central Division CPU arrested a 43-year-old woman and her 44-year-old male companion on reports of sexual abuse against a female victim which spanned an eight-month period.

“The woman has slapped the following charges: 16 counts of causing or encouraging the seduction, prostitution or sexual penetration of a child, three counts of prevention of cruelty to children and four counts of failing to report the abuse of a minor,” the TTPS stated in a news release.

“Her companion was charged with the following: 23 counts of sexual penetration of a child.

“The duo will appear before a Chaguanas Magistrate today.

“In another incident, on Saturday 29th February officers of the Southern Division CPU arrested a 75-year-old man for one count of kidnapping and one count of sexual touching of a 12-year-old female victim.

“The accused will appear before a Rio Claro Magistrate today, to answer to the charges.

“In another incident in the Tobago Division, CPU officers arrested a 28-year-old woman in connection to a report of physical abuse to a two-year-old boy.

“The woman, who was intoxicated at the time of the arrest, remains in custody.

“Charges, in this case, are also imminent,” the TTPS stated.
