By Newsroom

Jamaica’s Health Ministry has reported 794 new Covid-19 infections in its most recent update, as the island battles its third wave of cases which has threatened to cripple the healthcare system.

The patients, as detailed by the Health Ministry, range from as young as an 84 day old baby, and a 100 year old.

Jamaica now has 11,858 active Covid-19 infections, with a positivity rate of infection at 43.8%.

Of those active infections, 45 patients are said to be critically ill, while 76 patients are said to be severely ill.

The health statistics are further complicated by the fact that despite efforts to vaccinate a wide sect of its population, Jamaica has a vaccination rate of 4.6%.

The country is also dealing with the highly contagious Delta variant, having confirmed 22 cases this week.

On Thursday night, Prime Minister Andrew Holness  announced a string of measures to curb spread of cases.

It includes seven ‘No Movement’ Days, which in two instances will apply for three consecutive days, beginning tomorrow, Sunday.

The No Movement days are: Sunday, August 22nd Monday, August 23rd Tuesday, August 24th Sunday, August 29th Monday, August 30th Tuesday, August 31st , and Sunday, September 5th.
