Judge Rules Griffith’s Acting Top Cop Appointment Was Unconstitutional

By Newsroom

The High Court has ruled that Gary Griffith’s appointment to the position of Acting Police Commissioner was unconstitutional.

The ruling, handed down by Justice Nadia Kangaloo today, means Griffith, who is currently on leave, will not return to the post as he had hoped.

The lawsuit was filed by social activist Ravi Balgobin Maharaj, whose legal team was led by Anand Ramlogan SC.

Griffith’s three-year contract as Top Cop expired on August 17th, after which he was appointed by the former Police Service Commission to act in the role until a substantive pick was made to fill the post.

Griffith responds: “A massive conspiracy by a few persons bent on having him ousted from office” .

That was how Gary Griffith responded to Thursday’s ruling which determined his appointment as Acting Police Commissioner was unconstitutional.

In a video posted to social media, Griffith said he would not engage those “fueled by bacchanal” as to do so would suggest he needs the job for his own personal benefit. Griffith added that if the “powers that be” did not want him to serve as Police Commissioner, that was “their prerogative”.
