Kamla: “Does Government Intend To Naturalize Venezuelan Migrants?”

In questioning government’s plans for Venezuelan nationals who were registered to live and work in this country for a period, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar told her supporters on Monday night that she was fearful plans could be afoot to have the migrants naturalized, thus making them eligible to vote in local elections.

Trinidad and Tobago’s law dictates that the only people allowed to vote in elections are citizens, Commonwealth Citizens living in the country for a year, or non Commonwealth citizens living in the country for five years.

Persad Bissessar raised a similar claim when the registration process for the Venezuelan nationals first started in 2019, to which National Security Minister definitively condemned.
