Kamla: Entire PSC Must Resign In Shame Over Controversy In Appointment Of Top Cop

By Newsroom

“A constitutional crisis.” That’s how Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar describes the ongoing debacle involving the Police Service Commission and its process to appoint a Police Commissioner since Gary Griffith’s contract ended in August.

Persad Bissessar also accuses the Office of the President of colluding with the PSC, alleging both parties have acted unconstitutionally, to the detriment of citizens.

The Opposition Leader says the entire Commission must “resign in shame”.

She was speaking at her party’s Monday night Virtual Report.

Meanwhile, Acting Police Commissioner Gary Griffith’s lawsuit against the Police Service Commission will be heard by Justice Ricky Rahim at the High Court this morning, after leave was granted on Monday.

Griffith’s team of attorneys, led by Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, Senior Counsel, will argue that the PSC acted out of bounds when it instructed Griffith to go on leave, pending the outcome of an investigation into alleged corruption surrounding the issuance of Firearms User’s Licenses.

The High Court will also this morning hear the case of Ravi Balgobin-Maharaj, who contends that the Police Service Commission’s initial appointment of Gary Griffith to act as Top Cop was not legal and should be nullified.

Balgobin-Maharaj is being represented by a team of attorneys led by Anand Ramlogan, Senior Counsel.
