A Kamla Persad Bissessar administration would see a heavy-handed approach in treating with so-called illegal migrants.
In a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, Persad Bissessar referenced the recent abduction and murder of a Penal man, allegedly by Venezuelan nationals, to support her stance.
The UNC leader says if successful in next year’s general election, her party will take “aggressive action” in deporting illegal migrants to their homeland “by any means necessary.”
Meanwhile, Leader of the National Transformation Alliance, Gary Griffith, has said he agrees in principle with the Opposition’s stance on illegal Venezuelan migrants, however he says this group represents only part of the problem.
Griffith says many foreigners from other Caribbean countries, China and parts of Africa reside here illegally.
He says in cracking down on illegal migrants, it is important to ensure that those who have positively integrated into the society and are contributing to the economy be given the chance to do so legally and responsibly.
