FLASHBACK: Senator Robert Le Hunte (LEFT) and Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley (RIGHT) at Le Hunte's Swearing In Ceremony In 2017.

Hours after his resignation was confirmed by Communications Minister Donna Cox, Robert Le Hunte said that his decision to step down as Minister of Public Utilities came as.a result of conflict over policies.

In a statement, Le Hunte briefly commented on his decision, saying “My resignation was as a result of professional conflict on policy positions. In these circumstances, I gave our Prime Minister the opportunity to proceed in a manner which allows the Government to achieve its objectives”.

He maintains his post as Vice Chairman of the People’s National Movement and said he will continue to support the government.

Meanwhile, the United National Congress (UNC) has said “the announcement of the sudden resignation of Public Utilities Minister Robert Le Hunte shows that not only has Keith Rowley lost the support of the people of Trinidad and Tobago, members of his own government are losing confidence in his ability to govern.”

The Opposition also pointed out that Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley “addressed the population at length during a media briefing on Saturday but failed to let us know that not only has a key member of his Government resigned but a member who is integral in the Committee established by the Prime Minister to develop a post-Covid recovery plan.” The UNC accused the   Prime Minister of “ignoring the principles of accountability and transparency in public affairs”.
