Leroy Baptiste will take over as President of the Public Service Association come January, replacing Watson Duke.

Mr. Duke’s resignation, which was tendered last Monday, will be effective from December 31st and came after he was sworn in  as Deputy Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly.

“The Association thanks Mr Baptiste for embracing the challenge placed before him and ushers him in with open arms. Mr Baptiste brings with him several years of experience and a wealth of knowledge that will be applied to reach our members in the most efficient and effective manner,” a statement from the PSA read on Tuesday.

It added: “As Comrade Duke ascends in his career, we bid him farewell, understanding that we have not lost our leader but rather he has accepted the challenge to fight for us in a higher realm.”

Last week, Attorney General Faris Al Rawi filed a court submission seeking clarification of the THA Act in light of Duke holding both positions as Deputy Chief Secretary and PSA President.

According to a press release from the AG’s office: “The circumstances giving rise to this Application are whilst at the same time serving as Chairman of the Public Service Association (PSA) and a member of the Registration Recognition and Certification Board (RRCB) for which he is in receipt of remuneration.”

It further noted that: “The Office of the Attorney General has had inquiries from both the RRCB and from the Chief Personnel Officer regarding the status of Mr. Duke as President of the PSA which is the recognized majority Union for Public Sector workers.”
