Limited ICU Beds Available For Covid-19 Patients, Warn Health Officials

By Newsroom

Health officials remain deeply concerned about the high number of Covid-19 patients requiring ICU level care.

In Trinidad, 52 out of the 60 available ICU beds are occupied, with 46 of those patients not being fully vaccinated, according to Principal Medical Officer Dr. Maryam Abdool-Richards.

And in Tobago, two out of the five available ICU beds are occupied.

“We continue to see a significant percentage of unvaccinated or persons who are not fully vaccinated requiring ICU level care,” said Principal Medical Officer Maryam Abdool-Richards, as she restated a call for people to get vaccinated.

There are another 52 people in the traditional hospitals waiting to be transferred to a parallel care facility, with seven of those needing ICU care.

None of those seven patients, Dr. Abdool-Richards said, are vaccinated.
